Electronic rice cookers are a very specialized aid. Only those cooking rice in large quantities or very often are bound to need one… however, the temptation of preparing rice as good as the best restaurant at home might prove too much. Be aware a food steamer can do the job very well if you know how to use it -when you have had time to get familiar with the way it works.
Pay attention to the liner, the ease of use, keep warm function, temperature settings, clock and timer.

The Mr. Bento is a perfect size for his lunches, which I now pack each night. The Ms. seemed to small for me (I am a big lunch person), but I have yet to still be hungry. The number and size of containers forces me to choose wisely what I pack. For instance, Cheetos take up a lot of space, but are not filling, whereas cutup fruit is more filling for the space. In turn, our lunchces are much healthier. We've been saving money not eating out and we both feel better. The only downside to the Mr. Bento (I think) is the bag, which would be wonderful if it had room for a water bottle of some sort. The Ms. Bento has a terrific bag and fits a tall/long nalgene bottle aside the bento inside. All in all, we LOVE them!

The timer is a terrific feature. One note though: some reviewers have warned that the white rice capacity is only 2 cups. This isn't the case. The same scale on the bowl is used for both white rice and "mixed" rice. The scale is misleadingly labeled. The manual states that the white rice capacity is 3 cups, while the "mixed" rice capacity is 2 cups. Don't let this confusion hold you back.

1. Using the included measuring scoop, measure 1, 2, or 3 level scoops of uncooked rice into a strainer. (The scoop is 3/4 cup. If you've lost it, use a measuring cup to measure 3/4, 1-1/2, or 2-1/4 cups of rice.)
2. Rinse the rice in the strainer under cold running water.
3. Dump the rinsed rice into the cooker pan.
4. Add cold water to the pan so it just reaches the 1, 2, or 3 cup mark on the side of the pan. For example, if you used 2 scoops of rice, add water to the 2 cup mark.
5. Place the pan in the cooker, put the lid on, plug in the cooker, and press down the switch to turn it on.

We have one in my current common room (3-cup model), but I'm switching buildings, so I decided to buy one for the new common room, and get the bigger model so i could steam some vegetables and eggs in there.

Typical rice cooker usually burned the brown rice because it does not have the setting for it. With Zojirushi, the rice come out perfectly cook and taste excellent. If you want to make perfect rice you should consider this one.

The only draw back is it does not have a excess water drain on the side. With that in mind, you would have to take out the metal plate underneath the cover and clean out the excess water.

I already own 3 slow cookers, one 4qt, one 5qt, and one 6qt, all of them different brands. I never noticed that all 3 of them on low setting is not a true low setting until I used my new All Clad. I now know what everyone else was talking about. I made lentil soup and turkey stock both on low setting for 6-8 hours and my turkey stock came out clearer because it was on a true low setting. And my lentils were not mush, they held their shape. I prefer the 7qt size because I can freeze half of what is made. Even after we eat the other half, there is still enough for lunch the next day. - We use it primarily for jasmine rice, which turns out great in both traditional modes (~30 minutes) and quick cooking (~20 minutes).
-The keep warm cycle is especially helpful for a busy family, or for a hungry teenager who comes home and makes a batch of rice for a snack and then I follow up with the rest of the rice for dinner.
-The timer is handy for obvious reasons - occasionally I want to delay the cooking so I can set it and forget it.
-I didn't have any chemical smell - I did let the unit air when I first received it. No issues at all.
-Nice design for the countertop.
-Easy to clean.
