Sheppard’s Pie
Description This is the name of the recipe as we received it. The word sheppard is not a mistake and this recipe is made with ground beef. It does not matter. This is a great recipe by any name.

  • 1 1/2 lb ground beef
  • 2 medium carrots, sliced thinly
  • 1 medium red bell pepper, cubed
  • 2 cups frozen peas
  • 1 4 oz. can (no salt added) mushrooms, drained
  • 1 medium zucchini, cubed
  • 7 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/4 cup vermouth
  • 1 cup seltzer
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 tbsp. butter
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp. grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tbsp. grated cheddar cheese
Methods/steps
  1. Cook ground beef and vegetables in an ovensafe pan.
  2. Boil the potatoes in salted water until soft.
  3. Add the vermouth to the beef mixture, cook until slightly reduced.
  4. Add the seltzer and flour to the beef mixture, allow to thicken. Season if necessary.
  5. Mash the potatoes with the milk and butter. Season if necessary.
  6. Top the beef mixture with the potatoes, spread evenly.
  7. Top the potatoes with both cheeses.
  8. Bake at 375°F for 15 minutes, and then broil for 35 minutes, or until golden.
Additional Tips
The true British shepherd's pie is made with ground lamb. There is a similar recipe made with ground beef, but it goes by the name of cottage pie.
